PHONICS
The Foundation of Reading

Gather together any large group of reading specialists and you’ll hear many opinions about the right way to teach. Those differences warrant a lively discussion. But not here. Here is where I make my stand. Here is where my nearly 20 years of successfully teaching children to read is all the rationale I need. New readers need to learn the sounds of the letters. And they need to begin reading by blending simple sounds together. Sight words and complicated blends come later.

YouTube is a great place to find phonics videos to supplement classroom lessons. There is also a YouTube channel associated with this website:

Phonics is the foundation of reading. Phonics assigns a sound to each letter of the alphabet. It also assigns sounds to groups of letters that often appear together… But beginning with the individual letters and their sounds is the fastest way to build early reading skills. After an early reader experiences success reading smaller words they will eagerly tackle more complex reading skills.

I have included on this page several videos by Spencer Russell. I suggest you look for videos like his.
and EiM The Snappy Learner😁
They are simple and straight forward. Russell’s videos are aimed at parents and teachers. EiM The Snappy Learner videos are actual phonics lessons for learners of every age.

You’ll find phonics studies and resources in the Resources section.
